| Dinosaur Stampede Tour |
Travel back in time 93 million years to the Lark Quarry Environment Park, south of Winton.
Discovered in 1960, this site is unique. It graphically displays hundreds of dinosaur
footprints, preserved in rock that formed from the mud flats once bordering a prehistoric
lake. |
 |
Most of the footprints were made
when a large carnosaur trapped groups of coelurosaurs and ornithopods on the edge of the
lake. |
| It appears the carnosaur
had attacked one unfortunate animal. As it pursued its victim, the rest of the small
dinosaurs fled in panic around the sides of the carnosaur. The footprints were captured in
time. |
Queensland Museum and Winton Shire Council, the
joint trustees of the park, have erected a shelter to protect the site. The drive to Lark
Quarry will take 1.5 to 2 hours in a conventional vehicle. The road becomes dangerous or
impassable in wet weather.
Please do not walk on or handle the fossilised tracks, and be
aware that as an evironmental park, the wildlife and landscape are protected by law. |
